Collection Dispersal
Collection dispersal is the division or transfer of works from a collection to multiple new owners, institutions, or sales channels.
Definition
Collection dispersal is the division or transfer of works from a collection to multiple new owners, institutions, or sales channels.
Where a collector encounters it
A dispersal may occur through inheritance, gifts, museum acquisitions, private placements, dealer sales, and one or more auctions. It can happen during a collector’s life or after death and may unfold over years.
What it does not establish
Dispersal does not necessarily mean distress, conflict, or a complete sale. Publicly offered works may represent only part of the original collection, and private transfers may remain undisclosed.
