Collector’s Estate
A collector’s estate is the estate context in which artworks owned by a deceased collector are identified, valued, retained, divided, gifted, or sold.
Definition
A collector’s estate is the estate context in which artworks owned by a deceased collector are identified, valued, retained, divided, gifted, or sold.
Where a collector encounters it
The term may appear in provenance, auction designations, private-sale descriptions, museum gifts, appraisals, or collection records. One collector’s estate may send different works to heirs, institutions, dealers, private buyers, and auction houses.
What it does not establish
It is different from the estate of the artist who made the work. Ownership by a respected collector can add historical context without proving authorship, condition, title, or value.
