decide
Direct From the Artist or Through a Gallery?
Both are normal primary-market channels. Choose based on the work, the relationship, the seller's responsibilities, the documentation, and the support you need—not on the idea that one channel is inherently more legitimate.
Why this question is harder than it looks
A gallery may add curation, logistics, continuity, and transaction administration. An artist-direct purchase may offer direct context and a closer studio relationship. In either case, object-specific records and clear terms matter.
A practical way to decide
- Confirm who is the seller of record and who will invoice you.
- Ask whether the artist has representation that affects the sale.
- Compare the exact services included: viewing, packing, shipping, installation, and aftercare.
- Verify price consistency across the artist's active channels.
- Keep written terms and object documentation from whichever party completes the sale.
What this does not establish
Removing an intermediary does not imply that the price should be cut by a gallery's presumed commission. Cost structures and agreements are private and vary.
