Matting (mat)
A presentation and protective system, usually using a window mat and back mat of board, that supports a work on paper, separates it from glazing, and creates visual space.
Why it matters
A framing quote may specify matboard type, color, ply, window opening, margins, and whether the work is window-matted or floated.
Common misunderstanding
Matting is not merely decorative; unsuitable board, adhesives, or attachment methods can place the work at risk.
