The documented history of an artwork's ownership, custody, or transfer.
Why it matters
You may see invoices, labels, correspondence, catalogue entries, or prior-owner records.
Common misunderstanding
A short provenance is not automatically suspicious for a new work, and a long narrative is not proof without records.
