Definition
Inheritance is the receipt of property after another person’s death through a will, trust, beneficiary arrangement, joint ownership, or governing law.
Where a collector encounters it
An inherited artwork may enter a family collection, remain in storage, be donated, be divided with other property, or later be sold. Preserve documents that identify the object, prior owner, transfer date, and recipient.
What it does not establish
Inheritance does not by itself establish authenticity, current value, condition, complete provenance, or immediate authority to sell. Legal and tax consequences are jurisdiction-specific.
