Buying Artwork Sight Unseen

Reduce uncertainty with better evidence and better terms: complete images, scale, video, condition information, seller verification, written dimensions and materials, and an agreed inspection or return process where available.

Why this question is harder than it looks

Sight unseen does not mean evidence unseen. The buyer's task is to identify what visual and physical information the sales page cannot communicate.

A practical way to decide

  • Request front, reverse, edges, details, signature, labels, frame, and scale photographs.
  • Ask for a live video view under neutral and raking light when surface matters.
  • Confirm current condition and known treatment in writing.
  • Resolve packing, transit coverage, inspection timing, and damage procedure.
  • Save the exact listing and correspondence used for the decision.

What this does not establish

Screens cannot reliably convey scale, gloss, texture, subtle color, planar distortion, or every condition issue. Make the decision proportionate to the price and consequences.

Next step

Check an artwork to organize public evidence about a specific listing. The tool provides research context, not authentication or appraisal.
