Buying Directly From an Artist

Buying directly can give you unusually clear access to the person who made the work and to the history of the object at the beginning of its life. It also means the transaction may not have a gallery’s administrative layer. Good process protects the relationship rather than making it impersonal.

Start from the artist’s official website or a contact method you can independently connect to the artist. Social accounts are frequently imitated. Match the payment recipient, email domain, invoice name, and studio information; verify unexpected changes through a known channel.

Confirm title, date, medium, dimensions, signature, frame, condition, and whether the work is complete, currently available, or made to order. For commissions, use a written brief covering milestones, approval rights, changes, cancellation, delivery date, and what happens if the project cannot be completed.

The invoice should identify artist and buyer, exact artwork, price, tax, deposit and balance, included items, payment method, and date. Ask what additional record will accompany the work, but do not treat a certificate as a substitute for the invoice. Copyright usually remains with the artist unless rights are expressly transferred in writing.

Specify who packs, who selects the carrier, who buys transit insurance, when risk transfers, and how quickly damage must be reported. For local pickup, photograph the condition at handoff and obtain a receipt for final payment. For shipping, keep packaging and document the unopened box if anything looks wrong.

A direct purchase is ready when the artist’s generosity and the business terms can coexist on paper. Pause if you are asked to pay a different person without explanation, the object cannot be identified, or important promises remain only in disappearing messages.
