Consignment
An arrangement in which an owner authorizes another party to offer an artwork for sale while ownership usually remains with the consignor until sale.
Why it matters
Galleries and auction houses commonly sell consigned works.
Common misunderstanding
Possession by a seller does not always mean the seller owns the work.
