Dust cover

A sheet sealed across the back of a frame to reduce the entry of dust and debris and to finish the frame package.

Why it matters

Collectors often see it as the brown or neutral paper covering the reverse of a framed work.

Common misunderstanding

A dust cover is not structural backing, a moisture barrier, or proof that conservation framing was used.
