Collector glossary
Backing board
A rigid board fitted behind a framed work, or attached to the reverse of a canvas support, to reduce risks from impact, dust, vibration, and rapid environmental change.
Why it matters
You may see it specified in a framing or conservation quote or photographed on the reverse of a work.
Common misunderstanding
A backing board is not the same as a back mat, and its material and attachment still matter.
