Backing board

A rigid board fitted behind a framed work, or attached to the reverse of a canvas support, to reduce risks from impact, dust, vibration, and rapid environmental change.

Why it matters

You may see it specified in a framing or conservation quote or photographed on the reverse of a work.

Common misunderstanding

A backing board is not the same as a back mat, and its material and attachment still matter.
