Stretcher bars
Joined wooden members forming an adjustable auxiliary support over which canvas is stretched; keyed corners may permit controlled tension adjustment.
Why it matters
They appear in verso photographs, condition reports, and conversations about framing or canvas tension.
Common misunderstanding
Stretcher bars support the canvas but are not the decorative outer frame, and collectors should not hammer or adjust keys without qualified guidance.
