Strainer
A rigid, fixed-corner wooden auxiliary support over which a canvas is stretched, unlike a keyed and adjustable stretcher.
Why it matters
The term may appear in a condition report or description of the reverse of a painting.
Common misunderstanding
Stretcher and strainer are sometimes used loosely, but the distinction matters when discussing canvas tension or treatment.
