Collector glossary
Float frame
A frame designed to leave a visible gap around the edge of a canvas or panel so the artwork appears to float within it.
Why it matters
It is common around contemporary paintings and works on rigid panels.
Common misunderstanding
A float frame is different from float mounting a work on paper, and the outer frame may still be included or excluded separately from the sale.
