Collector glossary
Spacer
A narrow strip or structural element used to maintain separation between an artwork and glazing, commonly around the inside perimeter of a frame.
Why it matters
It is often used when a work is framed without a window mat or when surface texture needs clearance.
Common misunderstanding
A visible gap does not substitute for correct fitting, stable materials, or an appropriate mount.
