What to Do When Artwork Arrives Damaged
Stop, document, stabilize the situation without treating the work, preserve all packing, and notify the seller, shipper, and insurer promptly under the written terms.
Why this question is harder than it looks
Claims can depend on evidence from the unopened package through unpacking. The goal is to preserve the object's condition and the record, not to make an immediate repair.
A practical way to decide
- Photograph every side of the package before moving or opening it further.
- Record labels, impacts, punctures, moisture, seals, and packing layers.
- Photograph the work in place and every visible issue.
- Keep the crate, box, cushioning, hardware, and paperwork.
- Notify responsible parties in writing and ask before disposal, movement, or treatment.
What this does not establish
Do not flatten, clean, tape, reframe, or retouch damage without qualified advice. Safety and active water or mold emergencies may require immediate professional direction.
Next step
Check an artwork to organize public evidence about a specific listing. The tool provides research context, not authentication or appraisal.
