Who Is Responsible for Shipping an Artwork?
Responsibility is set by the written sale and shipping terms, not by a universal art-market rule. Identify who selects the shipper, packs the work, pays, holds risk in transit, files claims, and receives delivery.
Why this question is harder than it looks
The seller may arrange shipping while charging the buyer, the buyer may collect, or a specialist may be engaged directly. Ownership, possession, and transit risk can transfer at different moments.
A practical way to decide
- Name the contracting party for the shipment.
- Approve the packing method, route, service, and destination.
- Confirm declared value, liability limits, and separate insurance.
- State when risk of loss transfers.
- Record who must inspect, notify, and pursue a claim.
What this does not establish
Carrier terms and local law vary. Do not assume that the party who paid the freight automatically bears every loss.
Next step
Check an artwork to organize public evidence about a specific listing. The tool provides research context, not authentication or appraisal.
