Rabbet
The recessed ledge or channel inside the back of a frame that holds the artwork and the rest of the frame package.
Why it matters
Its depth determines whether the glazing, mats, artwork, spacers, and backing can fit safely inside the frame.
Common misunderstanding
The visible width of a frame does not reveal its usable rabbet depth.
